The “after” photos of the Wine Country fires tell the tale of the unfair nature of flames: Some houses burn down, while others remain perfectly intact.

In the series of wildfires that took down at least 5,700 homes and businesses, there were a handful of homes still standing in decimated neighborhoods.

SANTA ROSA RECOVERY: Finding bits and pieces of people’s lives in a fire-ravaged neighborhood

Coffey Park in Santa Rosa was one of the hardest hit neighborhoods in the fires, with row after row of single-family homes wiped out by the Tubbs Fire. Not many residents share the same outcome as Wayne Sims, whose house managed to emerge from the fire unscathed, as his neighbors came back to their homes in ruins.

Drone Captures Devastating Impact of Wildfires on Santa Rosa

Flames have destroyed thousands of homes in Santa Rosa, California, as a series of wildfires have swept across the state since October 8. At least 36 people were killed and hundreds more remain missing as of October 14, the Washington Post reported.

A day earlier, the LA Times said that more than 2,800 homes had been destroyed in Santa Rosa alone.

Aerial photos and video show just how close those flames came to certain homes. Sims’ own house is just feet away from another house that was taken down to its foundation. Neighborhoods were bisected by these fire lines. In another photo, rows and rows of burned down mobile homes can be seen, while another strip of homes was spared.
